Filey Bay Initiative was formed in 2003 as a Company Limited by Guarantee in association with Filey Town Council, Filey Underwater Research Unit (FURU) and the Organisation for the Research of Coastal Artifacts (ORCA) to research & publicise the historical, cultural and archaeological aspects of Filey for the benefit of residents and visitors and to increase tourism.
Both land based and marine, and the initial focus was to investigate the wooden wreck in the Bay believed to be the Bonhomme Richard.
There is a strong educational aspect to our work. Links with schools etc. Leaflets, display boards. CDs for schools.
Originally set up as a company limited by guarantee, but now a constituted group.
In 2006 the affiliated group Friends of Filey Bay Initiative was set up in support. This group put on talks in the winter and guided walks in the summer. This group is now disbanded and the talks and walks are now done by Filey Bay Initiative.
